Largest bicycle parade: Thailand breaks Guinness World Records record (VIDEO)

BANGKOK, Thailand -- Thailand's crown prince led thousands of cyclists through the streets of the capital on a 26-mile tribute to his mother, Queen Sirikit, to mark her 83d birthday; bicycle parades were held in 76 locations all over the country; according to Guinness World Records 136,411 people were verified as taking part in the event, which was organised by the Thai government and sets the new world record for Most people participating in bicycle parades simultaneously (multiple venues).

The Guinness World Records' record for the largest bicycle bell ensemble involved 639 participants and took place at the Prudential RideLondon FreeCycle in London, UK, on 9 August 2014.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the most countries visited by bicycle in 7 days; it is 11 and was achieved by Glen Burmeister (UK) who cycled from Breclav, Czech Republic to Shkodër, Albania from 29 April to 5 May 2013.

The high-profile event, carried live by all public television stations, was also an exercise in palace public relations at a time of concern about the royal succession in Thailand.

All roads were closed along the route of what was dubbed "Bike for Mom," which transformed typically traffic-clogged Bangkok, for a day at least, into a biker's paradise. Among the riders were the prime minister, his Cabinet, celebrities, and other VIPs. Similar rides took place in provinces nationwide, led by local officials.

Almost 295,000 people registered in advance for the "Bike For Mom" event, consisting of 40,000 in Bangkok and 254,863 in the provinces, but the actual number of participants nationwide was higher, estimated at between 300,000 and 400,000.

According to Guinness World Records, the event had around 146,000 "eligible" cyclists – riding at the same time – so it more than doubled the previous world record set in Taiwan with about 70,000 participants.

"This is a historic event for Thailand," Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said ahead of the ride.
