  Longest line of carved pumpkins: Calgary breaks Guinness World Records' record

CALGARY, Canada -- Save-On-Foods staff, along with kids from elementary schools, hockey teams and Girl Guide and Sparks troops helped carve 1,301 pumpkins (Guinness World Records requested a minimum of 1,000 pumpkins) which were assembled into a single line at the Calgary Corn Maze over several hours, setting the new world record for the Longest line of carved pumpkins, according to the World Record Academy: www.worldrecordacademy.com/ .

The Guinness World Records' record for the most pumpkins carved simultaneously is 965, achieved by 965 students at the Malvern Town Centre in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada.

  Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest pumpkin pie; it weighed 916.25 kg (2,020 lb) and measured 3.7 m (12 ft 1 in) long. It was made by New Bremen Giant Pumpkin Growers in Ohio, USA.

   The World's Longest Line of Carved Pumpkins was the brainchild of Save-On-Foods staff, who were looking for a unique way to drum up some community involvement as they debut their chain in Calgary.

  Employees, along with kids from elementary schools, hockey teams and Girl Guide and Sparks troops helped carve the pumpkins, which were assembled into a single line at the Calgary Corn Maze over several hours.

  "It's hard to describe until you actually see it, but it's very impressive," said Tony Piwek, general manager of Save-On-Foods Alberta of the line of pumpkins, which wound up being nearly 300 metres long.

  Piwek said Save-On-Foods, which donated all the pumpkins for the attempt, plans to either compost the pumpkins or give them to the Calgary Zoo if there are animals that could eat them, the Calgary Sun reported.
