The Guinness World Records' record for the lowest resting heart beat on record is 27 bpm belonging to Martin Brady (UK, b. 24 March 1969) who was tested at the Guernsey Chest and Heart Unit, Channel Islands on 11 August 2005.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest gathering of heart transplant recipients ; it is 132 and was achieved by Donate Life Coalition of Michigan (USA) at the Art Moran Buick GMC, Southfield, Michigan, USA, on 14 February 2014.

Mr Green said the discovery was made after a routine 15-second ECG last year gave his GP cause for concern and he was asked to undertake a 24-hour ECG.

Under normal circumstances his slow heart rate would cause symptoms such as breathlessness, dizziness and fainting.

But he has none of these - something he puts down to his years as an endurance athlete and marathon runner - and has rejected an offer of a pacemaker.

A former physical training instructor he has kept fit since the age of 17 and still walks for an hour each morning, the Your Local Guardian UK reported.

In the past he has run three marathons, two triathlons and has lost count of how many half marathons.
