 First Heartless Man: Craig Lewis sets world record (Video)

DALLAS, TX, USA-- Dr Billy Cohn and Dr Bud Frazier from the Texas Heart Institute have successfully replaced a patient's heart with a device that keeps the blood flowing, thereby allowing him to live without a detectable heartbeat or even a pulse; before that, Craig Lewis,55, was dying from amyloidosis and had just 12 hours left to live , setting the world record for the First Heartless Man, according to World Record Academy (www.worldrecordacademy.com).

The Guinness world record for the Oldest heart surgery patient was set by Herbert Carrington (USA, b. 17 October 1898), who received a Medtronic Hancock II tissue valve on 10 June 1993 aged 94 years 129 days, which was still working on 15 June 2005 when he was 106 years 134 days.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the lowest resting heart beat on record: 27 bpm, belonging to Martin Brady (UK, b. 24 March 1969) who was tested at the Guernsey Chest and Heart Unit, Channel Islands, UK .

  Dr. Billy Cohn and Dr. Bud Frazier of Texas Heart Institute ventured to save his life by installing a 'continuous flow' device after removing his heart and they did so.

  The turbine-like device, that are simple whirling rotors, developed by the doctors does not beat like a heart, rather provides a 'continuous flow' like a garden hose.

  Craig Lewis was a 55-year-old, dying from amyloidosis, which causes a build-up of abnormal proteins. The proteins clog the organs so much that they stop working, according to NPR.

  The device was put inside Mr. Lewis's body after getting permission from his wife Linda.   Linda Lewis said, "I listened and it was a hum, which was amazing. He didn't have a pulse."

  The installation of the continuous flow device started circulating blood to his whole body and Lewis was able to speak to his physicians on the second day of the installation of the device.

  But, Lewis lost his pulse and there was only a continuous flow of blood from the body and the new device uses blades to propel and circulate blood throughout the body by replacing the heart.

  Dr. Billy Cohn and Dr. Bud Frazier had developed the device and already installed and tested them nearly in 50 calves after removing the hearts from the animals.

  Dr. Cohn said that Lewis is the first man to receive the device and added that a stethoscope will not hear any heart beat sound and an EKG will be read for flat-lined.
