The previous Guinness world record for the most living figures in a nativity scene was 567 and was achieved by the National Union of Pro Loco of Italy, UNPLI (Italy) at Sassi di Matera, Italy.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the Largest nativity scenes figures, set by a nativity scene made by Sergio Rodriguez Villarreal of Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico in 1999, using galvanised sheets of steel, wire and tubes, had Kings Melchor and Gaspar measuring 4.7 3m (15.5 ft) tall and 2.05 m (6 ft 8 in) in diameter and King Baltazar measuring 4.6 m (15 ft 1 in) tall, with Mary and Joseph each measuring 5.3 m (17 ft 4 in) tall and 3.4 m (11 ft 1 in) in diameter. Jesus, lying in his manger measured 1.25 m high (4 ft 1 in), 1.23 m (4ft 0.2 in) wide and 1.9 m (6 ft 2 in) long.

One of the organisers, Rachel Middleton, said: "We were thrilled. It was a lovely atmosphere and a special event. It was great to see so many people taking part."

Hundreds dressed as shepherds, angles and wise men for the attempt. Midsomer Norton mayor Paul Myers said stewards at gates into the nativity scene handing out counters to everyone dressed in nativity costume had run out at 600.

The day's festivities started in mid-afternoon with Midsomer Norton library hosting a children's lantern-making workshop, and as day turned into night there was carol singing, music by Radstock Silver Band, and some late night shopping.

Hundreds braved the cold - and light rain - to support the world record attempt, and watch the nativity scene.

There was a countdown for the High Street's Christmas lights switch-on, and Mr Myers praised the efforts of Midsomer Norton businesses and residents for supporting this year's event.
