The Guinness world record for The largest music lessoninvolved 1,377 participants, learning how to play the guitar, at an event organized by the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, Illinois, USA .

"I hope this record encourages players to continue to cultivate their own unique style and spirit on the guitar," Vai said. "I think this record really showcases the interest that exists in guitar education worldwide."

The world record attempt took place at the Livestream Studios in New York and saw some 7,000 guitarists taking part around the world.

A second record was also achieved by default, as Berklee enjoyed the recruitment of nearly 4,500 new students during the first 15 minutes of the lesson.

The money raised, a dollar for each participant, was donated to the Steve Vai Online Scholarship Fund at the Berklee college. Vai's fund has been created for the benefit of outstanding students at the music school, where Vai was once a student.

"I'm very happy and proud to announce that Berklee College of Music was officially awarded the world record for the world's largest online guitar lesson ," said the Berkleemusic website's chief marketing officer, Stefanie Henning.

"This was an amazing collaboration of all the teams here at Berkleemusic with tremendous support from Berklee College of Music's president, Roger Brown, the college faculty and students, and, of course, the day's guest of honour, Steve Vai."

This marks the second world record for Vai. He landed his first world record for having the biggest light show in rock history while touring with guitarist David Lee Roth in the 1980s.
