DE PERE, WI, USA -- The Aluminum Association announced that the Commissioner of Tailgating Joe Cahn and a team of Green Bay area managed to string together 66,343 aluminum cans, creating a chain almost 5 miles long at the Brown County Fairgrounds in DePere, Wis. - and setting the new world record for the Longest chain of aluminium cans, according to World Record Academy (www.worldrecordacademy.com).

The previous Guinness world record was 66,129, set by Hillcrest Primary School in South Africa.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the most aluminium cans collected in eight hours: 152,800 - weighing 1,732 kg (3,820 lb) at Bosse Field, Evansville, Indiana, USA.

"As the Commissioner of Tailgating, I have a responsibility to the fans to make sure that they are hosting extremely fun and safe tailgates on game day," said Joe Cahn, The Commissioner of Tailgating, who has tailgated at more than 800 games and traveled 800,000 miles in his career.

"By breaking this record and setting out on the Can Crusade, I want tailgaters to be aware of the fact that aluminum cans are stackable, portable, safer and infinitely recyclable."

The effort was made by the Aluminum Association, a group promoting alum-inum beverage containers at tailgating events such as tonight's NFL opener pitting the New Orleans Saints against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field in Green Bay.

Guinness World Records requires the chain be completed within 24 hours, and that no more than 60 people participate.

Along with the excitement of setting a new world record, the attempt also came with a message: To create awareness about choosing aluminum cans because aluminum can easily be recycled over and over.

All of the cans, expected to weigh about a ton, will be recycled with the money donated to Paul's Pantry in Green Bay.
