 Largest cardboard fort: Duke University broke Guinness world record (VIDEO)

DURHAM, NC, USA -- Nearly 400 Duke students, faculty and community members helped build the world's largest cardboard fort in the heart of Duke University's campus; Naperville, Ill., held the previous Guinness World Records' record at 3,204 boxes, but Duke used 3,500 boxes all of which were recycled, setting the new world record for the Largest cardboard fort, according to the World Record Academy: www.worldrecordacademy.com/ .

The Guinness World Records' record for the largest cardboard box pyramid consisted of 51,963 perfume boxes which were stacked into 39 layers measuring 3 m (9 ft 10.08 in) tall and was achieved by Habchi & Chalhoub Co. and Fiesta Kuwait Co. (both Kuwait) in association with Paco Rabanne in Kuwait.

  Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest cardboard box; it was 6.12 m wide, 14.05 m long and 2.75 m high (20 ft 1.2 in × 46 ft 1.2 in × 9 ft 0.3 in) and was created by Chegg.com (USA) at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, USA.

  The structure comprised 3,500 used cardboard boxes that were collected when students moved in on campus in August.
  It stood 16 feet tall and occupied a 70-by-70 square foot area on the Chapel Quad.

  "The purpose was to educate students on reducing consumption and sustainability," said Tavey Capps, the campus sustainability director.

  The fort was designed like a maze leading to the statue of James B. Duke on the West Campus quad. Students stapled and taped boxes together to construct the fort, The Durham News reported.

  The organizers of Fort Duke were the Duke Arts Festival, Sustainable Duke, and Duke Sanitation and Recycling Services.

  According to Decatur Recycles, recycling a ton of corrugated cardboard saves 700 gallons of water and also can save about 46 gallons of oil.
