  Largest 5-a-side football match: Qatar breaks Guinness world record

DOHA, Qatar -- The matches organized by the Qatar football association (QFA) and Qatar Shell on national sports day ran for 11 hours, 58 minutes and 12 seconds, and they were played by 523 participants from all over the country , setting the new world record for the Largest 5-a-side football match, according to the World Record Academy: www.worldrecordacademy.com/.

 The previous Guinness world record for the most players in a 5-a-side football exhibition match was 464 and was achieved by BBC Radio 5 Live, at the Sheffield United Academy.

  Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the oldest regular football player, set by Tércio Mariano de Rezende (Brazil, b. 31 December 1921) aged 88 years old(in 2006). He regularly plays in the regional Championship as right wing for Goiandira Esporte Clube in Goiandira, Goiás, Brazil.

  The event was attended by His Excellency Dr. Mohammed bin Saleh Al-Sada, Minister of Energy and Industry, who came on to play as one of the record breaking players surpassing the 464 player mark that was set by BBC Radio 5 Live, at the Sheffield United Academy, UK.

  Other record breakers included Wael Sawan, Managing Director and Chairman of Qatar Shell Companies, Sheikh Thani Al Thani, Deputy General Manager, Qatar Shell and Hamad Al Kuwari, Head of Marketing & Commercial, QFA.

  The World Record attempt was part of the QFA and Qatar Shell initiative KOORA TIME, a five-year sustainable initiative which is designed to improve the health and wellbeing of Qatar's youth through football.
