The Guinness World Records' record for the largest erhu ensemble consisted of 1,490 musicians and was organised on the occasion of the First Xuzhou-China International Huqin festival at Xuzhou Stadium, Jiangsu, China, on 17 October 2004. The 15 bands participating played "Walking in the Light", "Two Moon-reflecting Springs", "Little Floral Drum" and "Horse Racing" for a total of 8 min 53 sec. The event was staged to promote traditional culture and the development of the erhu, which is a traditional Chinese stringed instrument.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest guitar ensemble; it was achieved by 6,346 participants in an event organised by Thanks Jimi Festival, in Wroclaw, Rynek, Poland, on 01 May 2009.

The erhu, a two-stringed bowed musical instrument, sometimes known in the Western world as the "Chinese violin," is often used as a solo instrument as well as in small ensembles and large orchestras. Its history is believed to date back more than 1,000 years.

Ji, 74 years old, has been walking with difficulty ever since he suffered through polio during his childhood. Later in life, he became an erhu enthusiast playing the instrument with a musical group in town.

As he grew older, Ji became even more obsessed with the erhu. He began playing with seven other enthusiasts.
When their instruments broke, there was no place where they could easily get them fixed. It was then that Ji began to study how the erhu is made In 1996, he bought some materials and made his first erhu in just 10 days.
